Join us Friday, October 2 for Translanguaging and Multilingual Identity in the Language Classroom (Part II), led by our invited guest Dr. Michele Back, Professor of World Languages Education at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education.
Building on our initial exploration of multilingual identities, language multiplicity, and translanguaging, this second session moves from reflection to classroom practice. Participants will consider their own translanguaging practices and observations, examine what students may be better able to do through familiar languages and through the target language, and share questions or concerns about strategic L1 use. Drawing on recent research in world language education and Elsherbiny’s (2025) proposed strategies (including concept comparison, audiovisual translation, vocabulary building through crosslinguistic connections, and complex discussion), we will consider how purposeful translanguaging can support, rather than replace, meaningful target-language engagement. Participants will design a classroom activity to implement within the following three weeks, anticipate likely challenges, and discuss practical responses and resources for continued learning.
