In this discussion session, which is the first of a three-part series, we will reflect on our own and on our students' linguistic identities. We will discuss the fact that many students come to Columbia with existing or emerging multilingual identities, and we will explore how we can best support this learner profile in our classes This will set the stage for an October 2 workshop led by an invited guest speaker, Dr. Michele Back (Neag School of Education, University of Connecticut), who will speak on translanguaging strategies in the classroom.

This theme is part of an effort both to expand on previous LRC programming and to carry out the work identified in the Strategic Vision of Columbia's Faculty of Arts & Sciences, which asks us to “study the role of language multiplicity” across the curriculum.
