Even as AI tools offer a number of affordances for language learners, recent scholarship has identified that some uses of AI can indeed undermine efforts at learning. In language study, this concern is particularly relevant when it comes to writing-based assignments meant to reinforce language structures and vocabulary.

This workshop will look at a number of ways that writing assignments can be reconceptualized to foster "brain only" work. We will look at how a process-oriented approach can help students to avoid the pitfalls of using AI to replace the cognitive effort required for learning to take place. Employing process-based strategies in writing assignments such as small-group brainstorming, co-writing, commonplace books, emphasizing originality and critical thinking, and recalibrating how writing is assessed are some strategies that we will discuss.

This workshop will also include a tour of the newly-configured process-based writing area at the LRC.
